The Wrong Facebook Reach

Facebook “Reach” Optimisation [Series]

As Facebook number of users is tremendously growing, and the platform is adding more feature regularly. Businesses are in turn getting more and more urged to penetrate into the system. After all, this where their audiences are, and it is inevitable to assert their presence in there.

Reach, is one of the major KPIs that every business (or page admin) is closely looking at, and is always optimizing for this index.

However, you – as a marketer – should know where to look exactly in the reports and what do these numbers mean, so that these metrics don’t trick you.

Post-Reach and Engagement

This simply illustrates how many users your post has reached. This depends on some parameters, like time of post, type of post (ex. video posts get higher reach than text-only posts), artwork, title,…etc.

Reach does not necessarily mean that users have given enough attention to your post, it just mean that it showed in their newsfeed.

Misleading reach

Sometimes editors and admins tend to share posts from other pages hoping that these posts will get noticed and reach more audience.

The “Reach” figure that you see in the page analytics, is related to the post not your page. To make it clearer, let’s see this example. If you (shared) a post that has a good attention that belongs to another page (and you shared it as a FB Page not as a user) this reach is counted for the post and whatever engagement that this post gets does not reflect on your page.

The only benefit that you can get is the fairly rare opportunity of getting some attention to your page, and this counts of course.

(in the coming episodes we will illustrate more techniques of creating viral original content for optimized reach)

These posts are penalized

Facebook has released an announcement late in 2014 that some post will be “Penalized”. Before getting into the type of penalised posts, let’s see how this affect you.

The effect

Penalised posts are suppressed in their reach. This means that if your post should organically reach 10,000 users, it will rather reach only 1,000 or so. Facebook is not clear exactly what will happen but they promise that the reach will be dramatically throttled.

Penalised post types

Facebook has stated 2 main types of such posts to be throttled in reach:

  • Ads-like posts: example of fb forbidden ad
Many might see this as unfair, but that is what will happen if your posts is whether directly or indirectly promoting something. The example they illustrated was for an announcement of a TV show.

  • Cheesy posts:
This sounds so much legitimate (at least to me)
These are the type of posts provoking or enticing users to click on the post to go to an external link. for example, the photo shows a handshaking men and the post text says “you wont believe it when you see who are these or “what happens next will blow your mind. Facebook says they can estimate these legitimacy of these posts by how long does it take the user to get back to Facebook after navigating outside. So if the user seems to be reverted back right away, then this post had something phishy. So bottom line is that you should avoid such posts. One might have previously used it to get inbound traffic to a website, but currently this shall not be the case, or you should make sure that what a user will see is really going to blow his mind.

Can you Audit your Competition?

So you think you can only learn a little  about your competition?
Think Again..

We always tend to assess the performance of some one or some business online. Everyone knows Alexa, and it is a lovely tool with some nice and rich insights like the global and local ranking as well some demographic data(though one can challenge its accuracy)
Still, tools like Alexa only performs checks on domain names. For many other items, it can’t be of a good help

Search Trends

If you wonder about how someone, some place or a product is performing, ThenGoogle trends for search will help a lot. So for example, you can get to know which city is more popular; Hurghada or sharm El-Sheikh, and learn that Austrians go Hurghada while Italians go Sharm, or you can watch the rise and fall of blackberry over time.

____________________________

This can help a lot when, for example, planning to launch a niche content site, an app or a business related to wedding. If you lookup “wedding cakes” , you will instantly get to know that you better launch around summer and that December is the worst time to startup your business.

This tool gives you a heat map for the location performance index. Really a useful tool, but…

Use Google Trends with caution:

You can not depend on such info only for your assessment.
A product could have gained its hype for the many complains of latest release, or a place is suddenly popular simply because it has been under terror attacks. Try Mumbai or Gaza.

Are you in Gas Masks business?

So high is not always good. Another example, is “Cairo” top search was in Feb. 2011, unless you are selling Gas Masks, you shouldn’t actually be targeting this market at that time 🙂

Performance in Social Networks:

Yes, check the number of followers, and likes on twitter and Facebook, but this is not the full image.fanpagekarma.com can help you get a broader picture even with the free version.
You get to monitor more charts, like growth rate, number of posts per day, Engadgment, response time and many other records that can help you understand this market type of audience and work accordingly.

Actual traffic generated (by your competition)

bit.ly is such a nice tool (specially when your competitor is using it)
I love this one, we might use bit.ly to shorten URLs for twitter or SMS use, but did you every try pasting your competitor’s shortened link in bit.ly and see what happens. Try this one from AlmasryAlyoum for an article they shared on twitter and Facebook bit.ly/1o1bL6b. you can see how many clicks actually generated by this link from Facebook, twitter and otherwise. You can see more about locations bringing this traffic in as well as times per day so you can optimize your similar posts, this is when such audience are available to consume such content.

Social Media [the business way]

Most businesses nowadays consider having a place on social networks is inevitable. Everyone is their ,and you don’t want to be left behind. Well, in many cases this is true. However, creating a fan-page and a twitter handler with business logo and some nice product image with couple of posts and tweets is as good as nothing.

Let’s be frank, you are there for business, you want to engage with your prospects, and converge leads to become your customer and keep them as much as you can.

Here is a transcript to get social (networking)

Engage, Say something..

There is a reason for the name “Social”, you must have something to say and it better grabs people’s attention to get them engage with your content.

“Engagement” is what these networks actually sell. Facebook ads for example, charges for Likes, Comments, and Shares.

Respond to fans comments, show that you care, thank them, work on their complains.

Facebook is NOT your website

Though it is very important to go where your customers are, post and engage with them, you should always have a target and KPIs or simply a measurement unit.

Creating audience and fans in the early stage might be a good target, but you should not continue to just build a fan base and do nothing with it. Remember, you are there to serve your business and eventually increase your convergence rate.

Social networks should rather act as traffic gateways. some or most of your posts should be a snippet for a content on your website, so users are directed to your site to continue reading or viewing your content.

Engage more on your website

Now you got more prospects to visit your website. Make your visitors feel good about doing so. This is the place for your best and premium content, your giveaways…etc. Engage more.

  • Blog is one of the best tools to engage customers, and keep them in your confined territory. prompt them to leave a comment and reply back to their comments.
  • Offer opt-in to your newsletter, and show a good reason to do so, what will they get when they subscribe
  • Offer premium documents for free, people will love to download, keep and consume your content (it should be good). PDF documents and reports is like your next level of authoritative content and leaves a very good impression that you are a reference in this domain.

Sell..

Yes, now is a good time to offer your products and convert your prospects to customers.

State your offering clearly (the product and the price) and make your call-to-action clear, obvious and standing out of the adjacent content.

On your pre-final page or payment page, make it neat with no other content to compete with it. You have gone so far, You would not like it that users get distracted with other content and diverge out of this page, and definitely no networks-ads like google ads for example.

Audience Insights, You have been using it the wrong way!

Audience Insights, in many occasions, among marketers (even the gurus) is interpreted as just a dynamic demographics visualisation and insight tools with some extra information that is acquired from users activities on Facebook..

in other instances, it is mixed up with the “Page Insight” tool that you find in your page admin panel..

This one is.. wrong

However, Audience insights is way more than this

May be it’s the name that is causing all the confusion…

So here is how you can make it work to your favour and get the maximum out of it..

So, Insights is your dynamic tool to slice and dice your audience and save them in groups

  • Create Audience Segmentation

  • Save to audience groups

  • Promote your ad to these groups

You will start with a light popup box. when you select “Everyone on

Facebook” you will get the US selected by default in the location box, unless this is where your target is, make sure to turn this off before you proceed.

Always look in the header bar to see the approximate number of audience that are active in one month based on your segmentation.

and in this header bar it says the estimated number of audience that is based on your selections… so far it is the US

Let’s say I have some custom audience that are based on mobile numbers, and I want to target only the males among these customers…

If you have some custom audience predefined, this tool will be way more helpful to you..

For example, for a custom audience list of mobile numbers (MSISDNs) from an offline store registration card or CRM or email addresses from your online subscribers form, you can load it right in the Insights tool and let it do the magic and tell you much more about such audience group.

you get to see how they are divided as in age and gender,You can do further slicing of this segmentation right from the graph for demographics as well as the location, so you can just click on any group of the graph and the rest will dynamically change accordingly

Now, imagine how you can load your competitors pages in here and see how there demographics are mapped and even get your message broad casted to them.

You should be able to see what pages, topics and subjects they tend to like.

This tip is very useful; learn how to set your campaign expectations from the Activities, see how your audience tend to engage with content, do they tend to like posts, share them or leave a comment? this is in comparison to the general FB users audience..

I simply call it the “Engagment”

What happens when promote to high engaging customers; your content will go viral and got to be seen by more organically. Something that I can write 10s of pages about..

What is really good is that you can do more segmentation and slicing, like among such audience, you might want to zoom in on users in a specific city, specific age bracket

the list is quite long … and interesting including behaviour, education, financials,…etc.

How can you make good use of such data?

Mainly you will want to learn more about your perfect audience to target in your next campaign, assuming that this way you will get more interested group of audience, so your CTR will be high enough thus drastically reducing your advertising cost while getting a high quality audience…

No more Facebook Ads (Organic)

Looks like the new year for many businesses will not be a good one. Or at least it is time to change the social content strategy.

Facebook claims that it ran a survey across hundreds of thousands of users, and they mostly agree that they see too many ads in their timeline. Facebook team decided to dig much further and see how does this happen,

and here are the findings:

Many of these ads, come from pages’ regular posts rather than being an ad by itself. Yes this regular post that make an offer and hope that your fans see it and engage with it. Not any more..
They say (the facebook team) that the timeline is a very competitive place andnumber of ads showing to users must controlled by the algorithm of facebook.

Ads of this kind will be simply Penalized

your organic posts or rather advertising posts will be penalized, i.e. not show to users in their timeline as much as it should normally do.

Then what Facebook Wants you to do in order to show this to your fans?
The answer is simple, guess what, create an ad

when this change will take place?

Starting January 2015, Facebook will roll-out the new changes and starting penalizing ads posts from appearing into your fans timeline. Or as per facebook “fall significantly over time”

Your turn,

Do you buy this?
Shall this impact your social content strategy?

Facebook taking the lights off email marketing?

E-mail marketing has been the number one promotion tool among online marketers and affiliates since years ago.. and I still believe it is a fantastic strategy and approach, and it is still in service with a glamorous appeal.

Hundreds of training courses, books, webinars and articles has been issued and held just to illustrate winning strategies to creating an email list and selling products and services to subscribers.
The subject of email management and list targeting is too broad to cover here.
However, when you build an email list, you naturally intend to target this list by email..

The Question is – Would you ever decide to target your mailing list via Facebook paid advertising rather than doing so via email?

The short answer is yes, you probably would.

The long answer would entail to first briefly mention how you would do so in the first place. You would simply use Facebook Custom Audience to upload your email list, and don’t worry facebook says your list is secured.. after all, facebook probably have this data, or at least much of it..
Facebook will then filter your list to extract those who are already facebook users from within this list, so for example if you uploaded a 10k email list, you might find like 7.2 already on Facebook and they would be ready for you to target.

This is the “How” now let’s see the “Why”

Reason 1
Unless you implement sophisticated demographics and segmentation technology on your website or blog, you probably don’t know much about your audience base except what they share with you like their email (obviously) in addition to their name and may be gender or age (if you explicitly ask for such info in your form) which you probably don’t.

Facebook takes like half an hour to get your audience ready for targeting but will take up to 3 days to get your audience ready in the “Audience Insights” and you might want to wait, here is why

In AI (Audience Insights) you will not only get to know more about your audience, but will be able custom segment your audience in groups and target each one separately.
You will be able to segment based on demographics, and know their likings (or interest) know who actually spend money online, who is a page admin. With a small twist, and minor effort, you will be able to target those who tend to click more on ads or tend to engage more with content, like content, comment or share.. This shall help you get your content go more viral or get you more qualified leads based on online expenditure behaviours.
Reason 2
The second reason, is Traffic based segmentation. So you have a website, or a blog and you promote your services via email. Some engage, drilldown to your content, some were about to check out but don’t to some reason, to my knowledge, at the time of this article was written, you can only get to know these users if they only login to your site at the time they start their navigation, and this will then require some work on the GA (Google Analytics) side or may be with some third-party integration.

With Facebook Pixel code applied, you can then retarget those who visit your site based on the pages they visited (easily) and the recency of their visit. you make some secret offers to those who exited before checking out, and better, hide this ad from showing to those who already bought your product.

Reason 3
The Third reason is a simple one, get more like this segmented audience you prepared, to reach out to. simply you would click on create a look alike audience and stay very close to the left on the slider bar, to get the most similar audience rather than a wider reach (this will be more than enough for your campaign) and you can always add more

How about you, Let us know about your experience with custom audience.
